SEO monitoring: catch ranking drops before your traffic does
Downtime is loud — users complain, monitors fire. SEO problems are silent: a deploy strips your meta descriptions, a redirect chain doubles, someone adds noindex to a template. Traffic erodes over weeks and by the time you notice, Google has noticed too. SEO monitoring is the practice of checking those signals automatically, before they cost you.
What to monitor, in order of pain
- Crawlability blockers: robots.txt accidentally disallowing key paths, meta robots set to noindex, redirect chains that waste crawl budget. These are the "traffic off a cliff" class of problem.
- On-page essentials: title and meta description present and sensible lengths, one canonical per page, valid Open Graph tags — the signals that decide how your pages look in results and social shares.
- Structural signals: sitemap.xml reachable and valid, response codes staying in the 200/301 family, page sizes and timing not creeping upward.
- Content integrity: keyword presence checks — is the H1 you ranked for still on the page after that redesign?
How often is enough?
Daily is enough for most signals — these change on deploy days, not hourly. The exceptions: response codes and robots.txt deserve every-few-minutes checks, because a broken deploy can take a whole site's indexability down in an afternoon.
Build it or buy it?
A weekend script can fetch a page and check its tags. What's hard to script well: scoring (how bad is a 61-character title, really?), history (was this page always missing a canonical, or did it change last Tuesday?), and alerts that don't cry wolf on cosmetic changes.
That's the reason we built SEO monitoring into SiteFlux rather than bolting on a linter: periodic on-page and crawlability audits produce a rolling score per page, diffs against the previous check, and alert when the score drops or a blocker appears — alongside your uptime and SSL monitors, so "site down" and "site invisible to Google" live in one place.
